MMA Classes in San Francisco
Skrap Pack Mission offers MMA classes in San Francisco's Mission District rooted in the legacy of the original Skrap Pack: Gilbert Melendez and the Diaz brothers, whose aggressive, relentless style helped define Bay Area MMA and put San Francisco on the world map of combat sports. If you are looking for an MMA gym in San Francisco with genuine competitive pedigree, this is it.
Train With a Legend
Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez holds a professional record of 22-8 and is a two-time Strikeforce Lightweight Champion. He captured the title from Clay Guida in 2006 and defended it four times against elite competition including Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Jorge Masvidal. When Strikeforce merged into the UFC in 2013, Gil received an immediate title shot. That is how highly regarded he was outside the organization. He also held the WEC Lightweight Championship, making him one of the most decorated lightweights of his era.
Gil trained under Cesar Gracie alongside Nick and Nate Diaz, forming the core of the original Skrap Pack. That Bay Area MMA culture, hard, technical, and unpretentious, is what you feel when you walk into this gym.
MMA Training in the Mission District
Our MMA gym in San Francisco's Mission District is located at 672 South Van Ness Avenue. If you have been searching for MMA gyms near you in San Francisco, Skrap Pack Mission offers daily classes with coaching built on real competitive experience at the highest levels of the sport.
What the MMA Program Covers
Our MMA curriculum integrates all four ranges of fighting: boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Classes focus on how these disciplines connect: entries from striking to takedown, transitions from clinch to ground, cage work and scrambles. You will develop a complete game, not just one dimension.
We emphasize technique and tactical awareness over raw physicality. Understanding why something works matters as much as being able to execute it. That approach produces durable skills that hold up under pressure in sparring, in competition, and in your overall development as a martial artist.
Who It's For
The MMA program at Skrap Pack Mission is open to all levels. Beginners are welcome with no background in any single martial art required. If you are already training BJJ, boxing, or wrestling and want to put it together, this is where that happens. Aspiring competitors can develop their full fight game in the same environment where champions trained.
